The tiger’s nest

Taks-2-closeup

Let me continue my web journal by featuring this time my pilgrimage to one of the holy sites or legends of Bhutan called Taktshang, the kingdom’s most famous monastery built in 1692. In English it is known as the “Tiger’s Nest” named after their belief that Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Bhuddism in this country rode at the back of a tiger to this site in the 8th century where he meditated in this cave for 3 months. This monastery is close to their only airport in the country, Paro. Looking from below, the structure is like a painting on the rock. Going up to this monastery is a pilgrimage of its own. I came here along with my Bhutanese and non-Bhutanese friends from Amman Resort. The monastery is incredibly nestled on a 600 meter cliff. How this structure is built here is extremely a superb “indigenous engineering” achievement. Not all can enter this place without a special permission from the ministry of culture’s office. The trail to go up is an enduring experience with very thin oxygen at this altitude, we are like gold fish grasping for air at almost every step. Although you can not take a picture inside the monastery, the view and the memories you bring along from here is worth the allday hike and the leg-pains you will have the day after.

Taktshang, haven’t hiked up there. Just saw it from afar. But the pic is nice. So very Bhutan. I miss our short vacation there, and the pizza…yummm…
